Today we speak to Maria Wells of Specialist Accounting Services and Alpha Payrolls to see how she runs a successful practice.
What is it you do?
We provide all aspects of Bookkeeping. VAT Returns, cash flow, Management Accounts, Tax Returns top name a few and liaising with accountants at year end. Also Payroll services including Auto Enrolment.
How long have you been using Clear Books and how did you come across the software?
We have been using it for over 3 years now, Janet My fellow discovered is whilst looking for alternative software to use.
Why did you decide to become an accountant?
I have been doing this job for many years myself and in fact, my fellow director Janet has been in this business for over 40 years, I started over 23 years ago and decided to do my AAT and its grown since then.
What makes you different from other accountants?
I believe we are friendly and approachable and try to speak in a language our clients understand and are always on hand to help.
What kind of clients do you cater for?
Everyone – from small one man bands with annual accounts to larger companies that require us on a weekly basis and wherever they are based with the power of the internet and cloud software we can cater for anywhere and everywhere.
What added value do you bring to your clients?
Peace of mind for them to work on and grow their business without worrying about their paperwork not being correct and up to date – we will be doing that for them.
What’s the one top tip you’d give to someone thinking about starting up a business?
Plan and talk to someone who can help you like us so you start your business in the correct way and its smooth sailing going forward to grow your business.
What’s the one top tip you’d give to someone who’s moving from start up phase to growth phase?
Again the key is in planning and moving forward the right way with help.

Helping people understand and meeting various clients from all walks of life.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
We’ll continue to grow Specialist Accounting Services and Alpha Payrolls and support more clients with their businesses.

Whoever requires our help.
What are your interests outside of the accounting world?
I have two teenage sons, a husband and two dogs (one only a year old so still very much a puppy!) that take up my time – I like being out walking the dogs with the family.
What will you be doing as soon as you’ve finished answering these questions?
Carrying on with a clients year end.
